#2Cents: MY RESPONSE TO MUSED MAGAZINE'S #NBHAAD QUESTION: What Can The Black Community Do?

Check out my response below!

Whenever I’m asked the question, I’m often led to a quote by Malcolm X: “The greatest mistake of the movement has been trying to organize a sleeping people around specific goals. You have to wake the people up first, then you’ll get action.”

I believe that the black community must first acknowledge that HIV is an actual epidemic and no longer just a “white gay disease”. Until WE realize that HIV is disproportionately affecting and infecting ALL black people, I’m afraid that HIV will continue to permeate our community. We must be strategic and innovative in the way we combat this disease. We must be inclusive of EVERYONE in the fight, including our infected trans* brothers and sisters. We must finally realize that we are all truly in this together. But first we’ve got to wake up, then, hopefully we’ll get some action.
